file compression for jpg's

Recommended Posts

Is there a good free utility for compressing files, mainly jpg's and avi's? I want to back up all the photos I have, but it's starting to amass to alot of file space. As a test, I tried using winzip on about 500 MB of jps files. The net result was a zip file of about 500 MB, not the best outcome. Is there something better, or are these file compressed enough?

JPG is already a compressed format and compressing further will inevitably reduce quality - by how much will depend on how much you compress but it is almost always noticable and, in my opinion, best avoided.

Regarding AVI's, it depends on what you want to eventually use them for. If viewing in Windows Media Player is your aim then that software will convert for you but it is not easy to convert back to an uncompressed format.

I have large numbers of photographs which I keep on a separate hard drive. Video files I keep on a hard drive (or DVDs for long term storage) and, if I want to process them later, I keep in their original format
