There were several beta 1 release candidates previously, but this one is the "official" release, marking it a milestone. At least that's how I understand it.)[Edit] Yes, 'Andsome, we know that you will pass the offer... :DP.S. not only En-US available this time, but the whole bunch - from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/all-beta.html

ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
This link gives some visual info on the most important changes in FF 2.0: http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2006/07/firefox...-beta-1-review/
cozofdeath
And just when I thought they couldn't make it any better! How hope they don't go to overboard with features and take away the simplicity of firefox. I do however remember hearing so where they were going to change the wierd uncommon format used for their history/cache file to a more common editable format. I wonder why they didn't do that or list it there? The only other thing I've noticed is that after browsing web sites for a while and opening new tabs, sometimes it raises memory consumption and won't go down untill I shut down all firefox windows. IE is like this too. Anyone else get this problem? Pat, you going to try the new Firefox 2 beta 1?P.S. Firefox rules!
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I have downloaded it, but then went browsing the Firefox beta forum, and what I read there did not encourage me to install it immediately. Mostly it is extensions that again do not work with 2.0, as it was with 1.5.But if I hear that the memory leaks are fixed in 2.0, then I will probably go ahead. Actually I think I will install it later today on my home laptop.
andsome
I know what is going to be said to me, but it seems to me that there is always an awful lot of problems with FF, and it's many new versions. Just an observation from an onlooker of course. :)
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Not with FF, my dear 'Andsome, but with the extensions, which are written by 3rd parties. Not all extensions can be updated/rewritten during the alpha stage, so many of them are not ready when the 1st beta gets out. I'll give these good people a little bit time before I install the beta.Of course you don't have any problems with IE6 since this is a very stable - very old - piece software. FF on the other hand went in a very short time through 3 major versions - 1.0, 1.5, and now 2.0. The features they have implemented are simply staggering! When IE7 will finally be out, it will already look very old :P
andsome
Is it really worth all this bother then? I get very little if any, trouble with IE, old or not.

cozofdeath
Extensions was one of the first things I tried after you posted and I installed it. I didn't have any problems but I only looked at popular formats (pdf, mpegs, wmv, txt, etc). Everything went fine. Considering the support for extensions and plugins I think its been great using firefox. Firefox has hundreds of extensions developed by many people. If people wouldn't design pages based on iexplorer users only, I would completly remove IE. Anyone use Opera in here? How does it stack up to Firefox and IE? rong
There's not many places that need IE now, the only one that I use it for is windows updates and that can be done in FF now I believe. I also had an E mail link open IE the other day, but I could still access the sight in FF by going to the bookmarkes link
cozofdeath
You right there isn't many pages now, but for the few you sometimes must have IE. Some Microsoft sites will not even allow you to view the page unless you have ie 5.0 or up, other ones like KB articles may not display the whole page. A couple of the last people in the show off your page section on this site developed their page probably only using IE to test changes because when you view them with firefox things appear differently. One page was very nice looking in IE but in firefox it looked stripped to nothing. I think it only the browsers that html/xml and all that good stuff once at the application level. The OS does see the packets I believe (on certain levels).
macdawg
"Is it really worth all this bother then? I get very little if any, trouble with IE, old or not."Of course it is up to you, but Firefox and Opera both are just as easy to use as IE is. They both are considered more secure. Do yourself a favor and try one or both, they are free. Both are very fast, Firefox has themes which are just skins to make it look amazing, Opera has skins.Firefox also has extensions, things like a weather updater, adblocker, fasterfox and their is a cool firefox tweak guide too if your really techie.http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_1.html

macdawg
haven't heard of anyone having trouble with firefox, a clean install and the firefox guide and I'm sure you'd be impressed, if not try opera, IE is horribly insecure right now.
