Transfering files between computers

A friend has just ordered a new Dell Win XP desktop computer to replace his 7 year old Win98 machine.

He has asked me to help set it up when it arrives. What is the easiest way of transfering his document files from one machine to the other (not programmes - he has the njecessary installation CD's).

I do not wish to physically move the old hard drive into the new computer in the hope that there might be a USB1 to USB2 method.

The new computer is very basic - with no serial or parallel ports - just 6 USB ports and a network socket. The wizard calls for a laplink cable connected via serial ports and makes no mention of USB.

I could loan him my external hard drive to transfer files - but it is my emergency back-up drive and I don't want to be without it for even a short while. Hence my hope that another method using USB might be available. I wondered whether a USB Flash Drive would do the trick - I have never used one and don't know whether this is practical.
