RAM query

Recommended Posts

I am a bit puzzled by some of the terminology to do with RAM and googling has not yet found an answer, so I am consulting the experts.

I think I may have a duff RAM stick problem, but am wondering about compatibilty.

When I look on CCL Computers' website I see words to the effect "may cause problems if not used with FSB of xxx". My questions are:-

Is xxx a maximum or a minimum?

If I put in two sticks do they both have to be of the same xxx value?

Preferably Yes,

Memory is best if is matched, otherwise it tends to operate at the speed of the slower stick.

This would slow down the memory response and thus the system operation.

Slower Ram normally would work but would degrade the system although some systems specify a minimum memory speed and will only work at or above that speed.

It is best to fit memory according to the motherboard specification for optimum performance.

Thanks r4may.

It is best to fit memory according to the motherboard specification for optimum performance.

My motherboard manual, for the machine in question, says "Support PC1600 (DDR200) PC2100 (DDR266) max 2GB."

My question was based, I suppose, on traditional Yorkshire thrift, and wondering about the posibility of, if the problem was not RAM, of being able to utilise the new RAM in my other machine. I think I shall go for the 512MB PC2100 option that should fill the bill.

Just go on line and click this link put in your MB or click scan my system and it will tell you the best memory for it.

Very odd. Their scan told me that I should use one of their PC2700s. My manual does not agree with that.

Well it would be very unusual for Crucial to get it wrong.

catgate

The first versions of that board were 4 slot dual memory types

PC133 or DDR

Max. 2GB DDR

2 x DDR, DDR266/200

2 x SDR, PC133/100

The later ones were DDR only

Max. 2GB DDR

2 x DDR, DDR266/200

Does yours have 4 slots or 2 ?

Only two slots, Boris.

I think I am looking for a PC1000 DDR266 512MB, but it's like looking for hens teeth. You would think it was one of Noah's cast offs.

:) Think I've cracked it ?

Crucial UK don't seem to be selling PC2100/DR 266 any more ???

PC2700 will fit your board OK, but will just run at the lower speed - 266 rather than 333

PS

What speed is the RAM currently in the board ?

Is it also PC2100 ?

If you definitely want a 512 MB PC2100/DDR266 ?

Here you are :D :-

266MHz 184Pin 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM 2.5V £31.73 +postage

You have done a sterling job there, Boris.

I have looked at several sites this evening and had come to the conclusion that these had been discontinued as "old hat". Even my favourite, CCL Computers, did not list them.

However, I have now got one ordered and hopefully it should be here Monday.

Thanks again.

I just hope this does the trick.

Just for my peace of mind !

Is it also PC2100 ?

Currently it has 2 x 256MB PC2100

If the new RAM solves my silly problems it will stay on this motherboard, if not it will go alongside (hopefully) the similar RAM on my newly assembled Linux machine.

It didn't solve my problems.

try this site http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurat...type=DDR+PC2100

maybe this could help...

try finding the specified memory for your mobo...insert the memory then reset your bios before booting it or change the memory settings in your bios.go to the bios setup and detect your memory...

if it has an auto detect. choose auto detect memory.

It's very kind of you to reply to this little matter after six weeks has passed by, aids.

However, as I indicated in the topic, if the problem was not solved by the new ram, I would use it in my Linux machine. That is what I did, and in fact the ram I obtained as a result of the the good offices of Boris, is actually in use on my Linux machine upon which I am currently writing and sending this message.

ive just skimmed through most of this because im on a server working out some bugs.

but anyways, if your motherboard manual states "pc1600/2100" DOES NOT mean you must use that memory speed on newer motherboards. in most cases, the motherboard was manufactured at a time when +2700 wasnt availible. id suggest Kingston Hyperx 3200. get yourself atleast a 512. (2 256's running in Daul channel work better then a single) by default the motherboard will set it to the hieghest it will support.

i suggest then looking to see if the motherboard manufacturer has a updated bios. this usually increases processor and memory support. given they are bois controlled via software.

the appropriate settings will be set by auto. and you should be good to go.

Good luck Mate.

P.s. - that should make your system feel alot faster. ive re-built a Pentium 4 2,4 533fsb on a asus 845g mobo, with a BFG Geforce 5200. that system was pushing extremly fast, that memory made a 200% difference.
