AlanHo Posted August 13, 2006 Report Share Posted August 13, 2006 I have just noticed that when I try to play a DVD in both my DVD RAM and DVD ROM drives using Windows Media Player or Real Player - the video is fine but I get no sound. I can play music CD's using both drives and both players without problems. I can also play video with its audio from files stored on my hard disc with both players. The loss of sound is confined to playing a DVD in the disc drives.However - I can play a DVD complete with sound using PowerDVD and Nero Showtime sofware.I have no idea when the problem started because I have not tried to play a DVD on the computer for a few months - the last time I played one I had no problems. I vaguely recall having the same problem about two years ago on my previous computer - which I fixed from advice given by an "expert" - but cannot remember how.I can see no problems in device manager - and have checked the Windows volume control to ensure nothing is muted.Advice appreciated. AlanHo Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Share Posted August 15, 2006 Not fixed - still got the problem but it is of low priority because I am able to play DVD's using other software.It is the curiosity factor at work here - a few months ago all was OK with Windows Media Player and now it is not.I had a look at the site you recommended - but frankly found it daunting because there were so many files available for download and I have no idea what I am looking for. I am so ignorant about computers I only have a vague idea what a codec is and no idea how you install one into Media Player.I had a browse in the MS Knowledge base and found an article about the loss of sound in WMP version 10 (which is the version I use). The article provides a link to a bit of MS software which is called "Windows XP Video Decoder Check Up Utility" which I ran. It listed 4 audio devices on my system (or was it 4 codecs?) - all of which had a red cross against them indicating that they do not work with WMP 10. It then provided a link to a file which would allegedly cure the problem - but it cost about $18 - I cannot recall the exact amount.My next move was to install WMP 10 and go back to the original version. This made no difference.It seems to me that something has happened to my computer that has affected just Media Player and Real Player - both of which play music CD's with no problem and both play video stored on the hard disc.I have posted the problem on another forum just in case a wider audience would harvest a solution - but without success - hence I am feeling very lonely. It's a bit like having a disease named after you.As I said - the problem is just an irritant and I can use other routes - but I would still like to rid myself of the itch.Thanks for your interest.
