heelbilly Posted September 2, 2006 Report Share Posted September 2, 2006 Hello, I have a hp pavioion 533w, windows xp home edition/sp2, and i have recently installed aol's safety and security center(ssc), which works great, except when i go to turn my pc off it freezes at windows is shutting down and i have to manually powerdown the pc, now if i uninstall aol's ssc my pc works just fine and will automatically shutdown/powerdown when i enable it to do so, i have uninstalled and reinstalled aol's ssc but the problem still exists, aol has no clue in why this is happening!!!any suggestions are extremely welcomed!! thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Anyways back to the topic, every page I have found on this issue people recommend getting rid of AOL. Well if you can because I have always had problems with uninstalling AOL. Does you task manager work when the computer freezes? Also try checking your event viewer to see if there is anything out of the norm. Its also a bit different but it has worked for me and may tell you what file is causing the problem. A program from sysinternals called Filemon can monitor and display all files being accessed. If you leave it running while shutting down AOL it should freeze and stop Filemon on the problem file. It has worked for me in the past. Just thought I'd pass on the word. It is unacceptable for AOL processes to continue to run after AOL has been uninstalled by the user," StopBadware.org said.I also had those processes running after uninstallation and I had to go to MSconfig and untick them to stop them loading next time. I only tried AOL's free internet cd a while back, it sucked resources like crazy, I could get it to uninstall and it installed all kinds of crap. If you don't call when the month is up they charge you, so I called well before the time ran out and was assured I would not be charged. Needless to say I was, so I called back and went through all the machines and different people and was assured again it was taken care of. Nope, got another bill. So I called again and was told it was taken care of and like the rest it wasn't. So I mailed the attorney general and magically the bills stopped. It was worst then any malware infection I've gotten. One of the main problems was the uninstalling of trial software, and the difficulty involved in stopping their bills. I did a short INTERNET course at night school, and we were all handed a leaflet during the fist lesson, called 'AOL, the upgrade of death'.Before he gave me his old computer just before that time, my son had tried AOL for a month. Attempts at a full uninstall nackered the computer and we could not get on line with it. We had to reinstall W 98 to get rid of the problems.
