I have another computer with microsoft windows home edition and i have already registered my microsoft word on it. I was wondering if i reinstalled microsoft on it would i have to get a new CD key for microsoft word? because it only lets you use it 50 times before u have to register. simplified i need to know if i can reuse the cd key on the same computer after reinstall of the same version of microsoft windows xp.

Instead of relying on the restrictions imposed by Microsoft software, why not install OpenOffice - it's free and compatible with MS Office.

The equivalent to Microsoft word in open office is called Writer.

The only problem I have found with Open Office is that it's spreadsheet programme takes a while to load .xls files from M$. If they are saved in OO's native format they fire up again quickly (I must confess to having to rejig a couple of formulae.)

The terms & conditions of Microsoft Office vary with the version you have. The student edition has different T&Cs to other packs which may vary between one another and the edition.

The only way to be certain of your rights to install the software is to examine the EULA (End User Licence Agreement).

Yes, you should be able to re-use it. If the re-registration doesn't work for some reason, a call to Microsoft should usually clear things up.

With earlier versions of Office or Word you are allowed to have on two (2) machines at the same time. (1) desktop and (1) laptop if they both belong to you.

If you have office 2003 or word 2003 you can have it on three (3) machines at the same time and they don't have to all belong to you but must be registered to the same house address. You can have any combination of desktop or laptops in this latter option. If at any time you need to reinstall your operating system XP as an example then you can reuse your office or word with the same product key you first used to activate it. :)

my friend wold me if they give me any crap to call them and tell them that i had to reinstall.

You won't have any problem at all. It will most likely activate from the link on the screen when you reinstall XP. If not it will display a phone number to call. When you make the call you will hear an automated voice requesting you to give some details of your product. Just follow the prompts and press the correct keys on your phone pad when asked to and have a pen & paper ready to write down the number they give you. It will be 25 characters in 5 blocks of 5. Type these into the box on your screen and the product will activate.

If both the above methods fail for any reason you will need to phone back and select the option to speak to someone. Microsoft's help center is here in the UK if you live over here so will not cost much to call. When you speak to customer services they will give you a new 25 number code to use that will work. Don't worry about speaking to Microsoft, they will not ask for your name/address or any personal questions, just for the product key number on your disk and a couple of other questions and they are usually very friendly, helpful and courteous. :)
