bilalbusy Posted September 13, 2006 Report Share Posted September 13, 2006 Hello everyone,I want to format my hardisk and then re-install windows xp professional on my pc. I did the same thing on the same system a few months ago and it didn't give me any headaches. This time around I have a weird problem booting from the cd to start all the process. I have changed the boot priorities in BIOS to CDROM-CDROM-CDROM. So, that means there is nothing wrong with my keyboard or its connection. When the computer asks me to "press any key to boot from cd", the keyboard for unknown reasons stops responding. And then the computer automatically starts booting from the hard disk. Once that happens the keyboard starts working alright again. It is only for the moment when I need to press a key to boot from the cd that my keyboard stops responding. My floppy disk is faulty as well, so I can't use any other methods to format my disk and then install xp on it.Can anyone be kind enough to help me here please?Thanks in advance. Another possibility is the keyboard itself. Is it PS2 or USB? If USB ensure that the motherboard legacy USB drivers are operating.It is worrying that the floppy isn't working - is this due to the drive being faulty or is not being detected in the BIOS. I am at work at the moment so can't do anything right now, but will try to follow your advice once I get back to home. I think my keyboard actually is a USB one. How does one ensure that the motherboard legacy USB drivers are operating or not? I am sorry if I look a bit naive here. My nephew actually inserted something into the floppy drive and thats stuck in it. I have tried to take that unknown stuff out but of no avail. -pops- Posted September 13, 2006 Report Share Posted September 13, 2006 Floppy alway used to be first boot device in previous Windows incarnations. If there is something stuck in there, that could cause problems. You can buy new floppy drives at very low cost and I would suggest that you replace the one you have before going much further. Don't bother trying to rescue your current one as it is most likely wrecked.When you replace the floppy drive, make certain you connect it up in the correct way - it is easy to reverse the cable.Regarding legacy USB drivers, you should look in the motherboard manual for details. This is what it was all about. Thank you very much for you help in this regard, I really do appreciate that.
