keithhowell Posted September 18, 2006 Report Share Posted September 18, 2006 If I click on My Computer I get a My Computer window opne up then a searching torch sits there forever (It aslo fails if I try to expand the MY Computer icon in Explorer). Pretty much everything else is working OK.I previously raised a topic about my CD-ROM drive changing into a removeable disk drive but before I could carry out anything to address it, this happened.Any advice / help will be very much appreciated Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have all the original CD's but I am guessing it would take me a couple of days to re-install everything(I am on W2000 Professional - does this have the automatic periodic backup you mention?) On his advice I bought an external hard drive that plugs in via USB. I bough a program called Acronis, available at a discount on here, and the whole system is now backed up and copied on this hard drive, from a new installation. On more than one occasion I have reinstalled the complete operating system in well under an hour from this backup. The faulty system is automatically deleted and replaced during the re installation. But this depends on how long you had that problem; if it existed for a long time, then it probably won't help you.Anyway, here is a short article that shows you how to boot into the last good configuration: https://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/ad...t_last_good.htmHowever, this article assumes a Windows 2000 Server with multiboot capabilities. If you don't have a multiboot system, simply tap F8 like every second after the computer starts booting. This will eventually bring up the start menu from where you can select Safe Mode, etc., including booting to Last Known Good Configuration. This all started when the CD-ROM icon (D:) in My Computer changed to a "Removeable Disk" and I could no longer use my CD-ROM drive. DJohn tried to help me and I think I may have offended him by not carrying out his suggestion of reassigning drive letters immediately. Yesterday afternoon it all fired up such that I could get My Computer to show the various drives, albeit the D: drive was still showing as Removeable Disk but low and behold, both my tower CD-ROM drive and my external CD-RW USB drive were showing. Not fully understanding the implications I decided to carry out his instructions. I reassigned the non-existant Removable Drive as X: and bought my tower CD-ROM back to D:. Everything seemed to work. I was reading stuff off D: and writing to the CD-RW on E:This morning however, D: has disappeared once more. I have printed out the safe mode start instructions ready to follow them but while I am still up and running would thee be any merit in deleting the "Removable Drive" and re-installing the CD-ROM drive Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
