andsome
Tax more and more seems to be this governments answer to almost everything. Now Hewitt wants comrade Gordon to increase tax on alcohol to a level where teenagers can't afford to binge drink. Doesn't this silly woman realise that many of the binge drinkers are in their early twenty's and can afford to pay more tax. Her idea will mean that the ordinary person will no longer be able to afford a pint, or a bottle of wine. NANNY STATE GONE MAD. What is needed is heavier punishments for drunk and disorderly behaviour, coupled with MASSIVE fines for selling alcohol to under age children. No one should be suggesting even more punitive taxes to comrade Gordon.HERE
dadyassa
Keep the pubs open 24/7, we dont have binge drinking here, only the UK tourists binge drink because its a habit they have, caused by having to swill it down in 3 hours or so.The Spanish know they can go out anytime and have a sociable drink and chat with their friends, and usually leave it till late when all the yobbos are unconscious or in the clubs. In Spanish bars, beer 80 cents a bottle, wine 1€ large glass, treble size UK shorts 1€ 50 cents, a good laugh and you dont have to keep looking behind you.Drinkable wine in supermarkets from 46 cents a ltr, and cans of beer from 21 cents. Fags 2€ 20cents a pack.
-pops-
I don't smoke and I don't drink but, I entirely agree with dadyassa. Problem is, though, that the 24/7 opening is supposed to be here but the restricted hours culture is so ingrained into the British that it's going to take a very long time to change this. The same philosophy could be extended elsewhere - like the prurient "Victorian" attitude the Brits still have to sex which ends up with the UK having the highest incidence of underage/teenage pregnancies of anywhere in the "civilised" world. catgate
I dont know what you are grumbling at. This is the ultimate promised land of Blair. A land flowing in sleaze, sex and debt. They are going to charge more for parking your gas guzzler, they are going to saddle you with paying through the nose for the new hospitals that they can not afford to run, they are going to watch you night and day through cameras on, and in, every conceivable corner, etc. What more do you want?
