scotsblood
Turned desktop on last night, got subscription out of date warning for CA Antivirus prog that I was using. As I have a deep aversion for paying for anything if it can be avoided visited CA site to see if free "trial" of new prog available - Yes. Downloaded and saved setup file. Uninstalled previous antivirus prog using its uninstaller as advised, rebooted and proceeded to install new prog. All OK during install but after reboot taskbar missing!! Now system shows shutdown warning and closes down after 60 seconds on every startup and user login!!Help!!
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum! It is entirely up to you if you want to use free or paid software. However, I wouldn't rely on trial software, especially on important security applications. Better use a good freeware program than trialware, where you won't get any support.I'm sure some other forum members will be able to suggest some good free anti-virus program. scotsblood
Thanks for your welcome and reply Pat.I'm not sure however the people at Computer Associates who also sell under the trade names Zone Labs and eTrust would be happy with the inference that their products are in some way "not good"!The problem is a Windows generated System Shutdown command and on subsequent attempts to debug throws up various modules as the cause, however the shutdown warning dialog box obviously activates with a 60 waring delay but seems to only have about 30 seconds to run by the time the screen is drawn. Other than changing the screen resolution I have yet to do anything constructive towards sorting the problem with the few seconds availableAny ideas? woodchip
Try a System Restore to before you changed things. You could do this in Safe Mode Keep tapping F8 as computer starts then choose from list.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
...I'm not sure however the people at Computer Associates who also sell under the trade names Zone Labs and eTrust would be happy with the inference that their products are in some way "not good"!...I do not say that CA's products are "good" or "not good", but your usage of trialware instead of fully licensed software (since you have no intention of licensing the software after the trial expires). That is why I suggested that you'd better rely on a trusted freeware program such as AVG Anti-Virus..P.S. Computer Associates have been around as long as I can remember (early '70s, I believe), but they do not have a known history of anti-virus or other security software products. I would rather look for software from companies that have experience in this area.P.P.S. And since your problem started with the installation of the CA product, I would just uninstall it, and see if this resolves the problem. Or you may try the System Restore, as the previous poster suggested.
Lamb Chop
I dont pay for anything these days - got caught on buying first computer with Norton's and never again. Pain to get rid of.No Scots blood either :D AVG Free edition as Pat said is terrific. Updates daily and to date I have nada problems. Also dosnt take up all my space when working like Nortons First thing I learnt on windows is when anything happens - system restore fixes it usually - well always to date.Heaps of free software that is NOT BETA - BEWARE beta.I go to www.Majorgeeks.com as they have preview of all thier free(and shareware) programs so you can evaluate if it is going to do what you want for FREE. ;)
-pops-
Shutdowns like the one you describe are a characteristic of the "Blaster" worm.See here for an explanation. As well as the Wiki method, you can also use Stinger to remove it click here.
