Hello all. I have windows xphome, hpCpmpaq AMD64. The problem is, I have been IM a Friend in Ireland for over a year. Every day, no problems. Then last week when she wanted to chat, pop up said I had to install flash player? I do not have any problems chatting with ppl here, in the states? Iam the first to admit, that Iam not the most computer savy, but just how hard is it to down load this Flash Player? I have read everything I can, guess Iam to simple mined to understand it! Clicked instal, said I might receive a pop up about active x. Click it to allow, well I have. Yes, your right it didnt install! I rebooted, just to make sure, not there? Could perhaps MSN, be doing something to stop people from Chatting outside of the USA? Sorry, to bother you with something so simple Iam sure. But just want to find out what in the world is going on with Me or My computer? :) Iam at my wits end! :censored: ..Any information much apperciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this. 60!

Hi 60! :) Give this a try.

Download the Flash uninstall tool from here http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase...cfm?id=tn_14157 and follow the instructions. Then download the off line Flash installer from here http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/do...mp;promoid=BIOW and install as per the instructions.

After you've done that, see if it works :)

HTH, dagwoood.

Hello,Dagwood. Thank you for you for answering my ?'s! Iam concered about using the uninstaller thing! :( I had to work 2 hrs last night to get into safe mode. Never done that before to make myself the administrator! That in it self was a learning experince, to say the least..Where are the younger children when you need them! lol They know these things inside and out. Now if I use the uninstall thing and then go to the 2nd site you mentioned, what happens if I dont receive the activeX? I still want to be able to chat with people here.. Sorry this is so long, but, just concered..Really dont want any problems. :( All info much appreciated. As I said Iam not the most comptuer savy person around. 60!

Hello 60! and sorry for the delay in getting back to you

You should be fine running the uninstaller and then re-installing, I've had to do it myself when Flash wouldn't work on my system. I normally update Flash on my system by doing an off-line install(i.e.not visiting a web site/page to download it, but using the installer I linked to above)and I've never had any problems.

If you're really concerned about not being able to get Flash to work at all, have you got any back up software you could run just to be on the safe side? I'm not sure whether creating a restore point would save Flash player, maybe someone else could confirm whether it does/doesn't.

Hello Dagwood, thank you for your reply... Ok, I have used the uninstaller and it is complete... Now how do I know if when I installed it, it worked? There never was a pop up for active x? Hopefully everything is fine now. I will let you know. 60!

Hello 60!. You wont get a pop up when you do an off-line install because you only get the pop up when it's installed when you're in Internet Explorer. The pop up/warning is a security feature of Internet Explorer so as a site can't install Active X controls without you knowing about it.

I hope it's cured your problem anyway :)

Do you really need Flash Player installed?

I have it permanently disabled on my machines as I find it intrusive and an all in all damned nuisance - not so much the program itself but the uses that people put it to.

I question why, after all this time, you get a popup saying you need Flash Player. Is it a genuine request or a request for you to install it so you can be subjected to a barrage of things you might not want?

Hello Pops! Thanks for answering. Which I had thought to take a picture! Yes, I beleive it is genuine request. After I chated with my friend in Ireland, someone sent me something from a card company. It also said I needed to down load Flash Player??? I realize everyone is very Tired of reading this same post! :censored: As I said, I guess I have opened a can of worms for myself! I guess I really dont need to talk with her, but do so enjoy it. Even more so after the chat this Am! I have been reading several post from different sites. But, I come here for advice to learn and read! Everyone has been very helpful with this ol gal! I have learned alot here. It seems Iam not the only one having this problem?? Any other ideas? Sorry this is so long.. Thank you 60!

Don't worry about posts being long - we're here to help if we can and we're not tired of reading them.

Remember as well that a lot of us (including me) are well over 60! - A lot are below 60 as well :)

I would still be very reluctant to download this software.

I remember in some other machines I had that Flash was nothing but a nuisance and it eventually gave up working even though I didn't do anything to encourage that and it wouldn't reload no matter what I tried to do. That was the initiator of me being averse to it. I had expected that when Flash was bought out by Adobe from Macromedia, it might have improved but, it hasn't.

Thanks Pops... :) I'll just forget about the dumb old thing!!! Its just that I worked so hard to get it installed. 2 1/2 just to get me as Administrator?!!! What a trial and error that was! lol

Especially for someone as I, who isnt computer savey! Have a wonderful day. I'll be back as always to read all of the post. Hopefully I wont run into anymore problems! Sure hope not, anyway. Thank you..60!
