dadyassa
Need some help please guys.....Had a problem with the graphics on the monitor, sometimes I would boot up and nothing, power off undo and redo connection on card then it would be ok. In the end I used to leave pc on 24/7, but then a dreaded XP update that re-booted and nothing since then.Tried a different graphics card but no go, all the fans start up including graphics card, and while checking these realized that there are no beeps on bootup.Could it be MB or perhaps PSU causing the problem ?The pc is about 3 years old and of course bits not made anymore Its an AMD K7 AthlonXP 2600 on an Asrock AMD K7S8XE+, with a Geforce FX5200 graphics card.If I got another PSU to try would I have to be careful with the power, at the mo it has a 300w or could I get larger ?TIA John
trackrat
It is worth trying another PSU, but when you do just connect the mobo, and see if it will boot. Yes you can use a bigger PSU.It is worth buying a good PSU (Seasonic-Antec-Hyper) so it can be used again if you are into upgrading.I personally would not use under a 450 watt. dadyassa
Thanks for the quick reply trackrat, I will do as you say and get a bigger PSU and give it a go.Apparently 300 is the lowest reccomended for that card, so perhaps it has done well lasting for 3 years Cheers john
-pops-
I've recently had experience of two PSUs failing - one mine and one my son's. Symptoms somewhat similar to yours - didn't seem to be enough "oomph" to get everything powered up but, if it did manage to power up it would be OK. Eventually it wouldn't do it any longer and it died.Nothing wrong in putting a higher power unit in, the machine will only draw the power it needs. The problems arise when there is not enough power. dadyassa
Thanks pops, I am in the process of tracking one down now, I do miss the PC shops in the UK where you can just buy bits off the shelf. Here you have the problem of when the shop is open also. Scarecrow Man
You say it has a 300w PSU. In my experiences, 400 is minimum for a any CPU 478 pin and up (462 for AMD) and if you add a high power graphics card, you need more. More power cannot hurt, but not enough can. (USB devices included, as they do draw power)Give this a try: http://www.journeysystems.com/power_supply_calculator.php
