Starting programs takes long

Hi,

my problem is a bit difficult to define in a short sentence. I wanted to google some help, but I just couldn't find any key words that would describe it and help me find a solution.

I've Windows XP on my laptop (Dell D600) and I had to turn them off by force. From that time all programs start very long time, like 5 minutes. When the program is already running, it's ok then, but the first start takes really long. When I start the program from start menu, it (and also taskbar) is dead for these 5 minutes before the program finally starts. If I start program from Total commander, it is down during the start of the program etc.

I tried to find if there was some suspicious process running during these slow starts but I couldn't find anything. I let the antivirus and antispyware run - nothing found. I can't use system restore, it was unfortunately disabled so I don't have any usable restore point at my disposal. In safe mode, programs start normally, quickly.

Has anybody encountered something like this? Or maybe there's some program that would help me watch what happens in the system when probrams start? Any advice would be helpful. Of course except reinstalling the whole system ;)

is worrying. What did you do to carry this process out?

Assuming you don't have a backup of your system, I suggest that you save any data you need and re-install. I realise you don't want to do this but, as far as I can see, this is the only way you will be able to get the startup procedure back to normal.

However, before you do anything drastic, wait to see what others think.

I got this notebook a short time ago from work. Sometimes I have problems to wake it up when it's in sleep mode. The "turn on/off" button doesn't work if I push it short, long, none. Once I had to remove the battery and then the notebook woke up and all the processes were still running. But that time, it rebooted and you know the result.

And yes I'd like to avoid reinstallation of the whole system, if anyone has any idea. Thanks for help, I'll wait for a while,

Hi again,

I'm happy to let you know that I no longer have the problem. I was advised to try this program http://www.download3k.com/Install-free-Error-Cleaner.html to clear and correct the registry entries.

I was skeptic, I couldn't imagine, why this should help, wha are the chances? But it did.

you should NEVER remove your battery from your computer while it is on.

You should change your power settings if you have to, or call the manufacturer about the problem, but never remove the battery.

Glad your problem is fixed though :)

The Power button usually doesn't work when Windows is running - to prevent it from being accidentally pushed. However, if you really want to power off while Windows is running (e.g. a hang that doesn't let you shut down normally), then hold the Power button down for a minute or so, and it will power off.

It is still not good that you have to do that, but still better than taking the battery out.
