Adela
(winXP Pro; OE 6.0; IE 6.0; Dell Dimension XPS T450MHz Pentium III; Symantec AV Corporate Edition) Hello, I hope someone came across this problem?: I had scheduled my Norton (LiveUpdate) to scan almost everyday and it was fine for sometime then stopped. I then started scanning manually just as frequently and it was fine...until since a month or so ago, it just stopped doing it anymore, automatically or manually. However, it does scan frequently, and catches daily these viruses: W32.Stration.D; W32.Stration.@; W32.Netsky.P but not the LiveUpdate (or maybe it is? I don't know), and I get a msg that my LiveUpdate hasn't been updated for over 30 days. I was advised to go to Symantec website to find a Manual removal tool, but they don't have a Manual one anymore, and on their list of viruses to remove with their tool, I didn't see any of my 3 viruses above. Should I take any one of the removal tools regardless of their viruses on their list? Or do they have another list of viruses? I do religiously scan the Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, defrag, etc. If anyone might know why and how to fix I'll appreciate it a lot. :) Thanks so very much! andsome
Have you tried removing Norton completely and then reinstalling? Unless you know what you are doing however this can be quite difficult and time consuming. You won't remove it completely without editing the registry, even with Symantec removal tools. Because of problems such as yours, a good many on the forum have now stopped using it. The choice is yours.
Adela
Thanks very much andsome! And you're right I won't touch the registry as I don't crave for MORE headaches than I already have been having... :o) I'm beginning to realize that I'll have to switch back to AVG! I used to have Norton from the beginning and finally switched to Grisoft and was content...but one day my computer stopped working altogether and I had to call a techi. He said instead of fixing I'll upgrade you to WinXP...only I didn't know he'd give me a non-genuine copy!!! At the same time he also changed my AVG to Symantec Corporate Edition...and on top of it all chaged me an arm and a leg. Thanks again for reminding me that Symantec/Norton - thumbs down! Scarecrow Man
There are manual removal instructions for Norton Corporate. I had to do this not too long ago, on a machine that was acting up.I am using Norton Corporate 7.x and here is the instructions page: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s...&view=docid(Norton Corporate 7.x and Windows XP)
Adela
There are manual removal instructions for Norton Corporate. I had to do this not too long ago, on a machine that was acting up.I am using Norton Corporate 7.x and here is the instructions page: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s...&view=docid(Norton Corporate 7.x and Windows XP)Hi Scarecrow and thanks for your suggestion, but actually the one I have is not Norton but Symantec (though I don't have a business - the techi installed it without consulting and charging accordingly!) and the number is 8.00.9374 which makes it 8? So I wonder if it makes a difference? Anyway, I'm always afraid of geting so close to the internet innards (mainly registry, etc.)! LOL! I also discovered that my LiveUpdate button is disabled because I'm one of the "restricted users". I discovered this when I was following the instructions on the Symantec site until I got to that closed door! Then, it said, we can do it through other steps...but I found it too complicated, for now anyway. This is the site: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s...lg=en&ct=usI may have misinterpreted those instructions maybe, plus much of the terminology unfamiliar to me in that context? What do you think? Unfortunately in a few hours I'll have to go away until January so, may I continue requesting help at that time?Meantime, I wish you Very Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Good New Year! :) Adela
andsome
Symantec's trade name for their products IS Norton. Unfortunately their products are very difficult to remove completely, even with the tools that they provide. The last time I did this on my own computer I had to edit the registry, and only last week I had the same problem on a friends computer with an AV program that had gone wrong. There were even folders hidden, that I had to rummage out. If I were you I would ask this person who put the program in to take it back out again, that is, if you can trust them to mess about again. cozofdeath
Has anyone tried Norton's removal tool? It supposedly uninstalls their products completely. I read in a pcworld magazine that it works.
Adela
Thank you all who helped with great suggestions!!! I report that - miraculously - my Norton AV started its regular daily scannings again without my doing a thing! It goes to show that yes, a computer can have a mind of its own... Thanks so much again! :-) AdelaP.S. I believe the "Preview" button here doesn't work? I pressed it, as usual, and it didn't registered on the other screen above. Tried it twice...
