My computer is clean these days

But, its getting busy sometimes when I am not running anything - so I have taken to ctrl-alt-delete as taught by Pops to see what is going on.

Nothing running but on applications.

These 2 having a ball whilst the hard drive sounds like it is scanning but no programs running.

helpsvc.exe system using various but up to 86% CPU and 13,644k

also

wmiprvse.exe network also using a lot of cpu and K;s.

All other applications quiet.

So what are they up to?

Anyone know :D

1. there are a few conditions, where cleaners install extra stuff. If you run Norton, or others anti-spy or virus, you may just try another as an experiment, but those corps are pretty sneaky. They all sniff stuff out stuff.

2. start>>>run>>>"msconfig", and check the start-up apps, and the other "services", spyware installs all kinds of stuff in here, as many apps do, an overload here, can cause spin time. Be careful with this, you can choose normal, diagnostic, and selective start-up configurations, to test.

You can also watch your threads, as you learned, see this

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/wmiprvse.exe.html read the end, it's interesting.

to experiment, you can disable suspicious services, and retest with this config, on reboot.

3. There are "windows.dlls and others" which look authentic, but are copies, buy hax and others, make sure your os disks, and everything after, is from genuine sources, and check the latest ms bug reports, related to this, by searching ms, with the exe name, or msdn, with exe name.

4. You may also just have a crazy file swapping going on, when Windows managed memory, tries to allocate extra hard disk swap space on a capacitated, nearly full disk, in those cases, you can actually here it moving stuff around. make sure your disks are ample in free space, and defragged etc.

good luck

Well one thing I dont need to do is defrag as get that bit done every sat in 'housekeeping' update and run everything to catch those pesky spies and stuff, so I have no fragmented files, so one reason why I cant understand it.

Will go look at the rest of the stuff - all good learning.

Have no worries now re useage as my ISP has upped my plan from 250MB to 3000MB for $5 extra - good eh - seems for info they had a lot of others same problem, due to Telstra mucking around with the telephone exchanges and my problem dated from when they started last month. They are upgrading to ADSL2 and 20MB or some such, and on their own plan costs an arm and leg, well they have to make a profit out of the telephone lines paid for over many years when it was a publicly owned entity by the long suffering taxpayers now - also to pay the 8.4 million bonus the chief just awarded himself plus the others in the trough

Today all was quiet when I booted, maybe they have gone to the bottle shop to buy the grog for tonight. :D
