Foibles Posted January 10, 2007 Report Share Posted January 10, 2007 I installed it and all that shows up is the windows screen with the loading bar. After that it just goes blank and you can't do anything. When I was installing it it asked for me to insert disc 2, but I don't have disk 2 and it didn't come with it. :( It will start up in Safe Mode. -pops- Posted January 10, 2007 Report Share Posted January 10, 2007 Are you sure that the "Old 550 MHz Compaq" meets the minimum specification for running Windows XP?Windows XP comes on one disk. What is the disk you are trying to install from? Is it a Microsoft XP disk or something else? If it is an upgrade version, that will request the insertion of a qualifying disk during installation but that is not the same as requesting disk 2.Can you give us some more details, please? You say you can boot into Safe Mode; can you check in there if all device drivers are installed and working? (Control Panel, System, tab Hardware, Device Manager - look out for any yellow exclamation marks or other error signs.)Still confused about your "disk 2" statement; there is no additional disk to a Windows XP installation. Coreper Posted January 11, 2007 Report Share Posted January 11, 2007 it could also be that your hard disk is just too old: its worni had that a while ago: system started fast until the windows loadbar screen, after that it takes a too long while to get to the login screen, and it takes ages to get logged in [not done in 2 hours!]that could be your problem, if this is the case, try reinstalling a hard disk! I have installed hundreds of copies of windows XP and, there is no disk 2.What was/is previously on the drive? How are you doing this install? Can you clarify what the version of Windows it is i.e. what does it say on the disk in respect of "Professional Edition; Home Edition; Corporate Edition; Upgrade; etc.; etc?It does occur to me that if the version is an upgrade, then during the install procedure on to a "clean" drive, you are required to insert a qualifying disk i.e. a full copy of a previous (but recent) version of Windows to prove that you are permitted the upgrade. It is not an upgrade version.I am trying to determine an explanation for the 2nd disk request and the only thing I can think of is that it is requesting a qualifying disk. When it asks for that mysterious disk 2, please write down exactly what it is requesting. I have no other ideas at this stage; or would a repair install help? Or something like that.it means that its so old that it works really slow, or not at allbtw: weird that you needed a second cd, 'cause ive got the Windows XP Pro + SP2 and that is all on one cd... (I didn't activate it)I tried installing it again and got this message. My brother must have read it incorrectly the first time. Sorry for all the confusion. I have a very old matshi-something (cant quite remember the name) that works perfectly for installing XP. I keep it around so that if I ever have a problem, I just use this old CD-ROM to install and re-install the new device upon completion.I have also found that CD-RW and DVD-RW drives have more trouble than a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM.
