Anyone else having problems with this lately - that is over last 4 months?

I turned it off as it was trying seemingly daily to download and nothing happened.

So I went to manual and then got sick of the nag nag nag of that blooming red shield.

So turned it back on again.

Yesterday little yellow shield appeared - downloading updates.

Checked but nothing showing in programs add/get rid of.

Today yellow shield and trying again. Nothing so turned off the auto once more.

Went to update site and tried to manually download one critical, but not the second which was IE7 already been there done that it doesn't work properly on my computer and I have rolled back to IE6, and computer working fine once more.

So their computer got all sulky and wouldn't download the one critical said problem with my computer come back later

Just did that and it did the same so logged off site and returned, and then added non critical ones to download and it kindly gave them to me

I did think IE7 was an optional item as it can be uninstalled from Control Panel.

Anyway have now turned on advise and let me decide option on security centre to stop the nagging, worse than having a nagging wife she said laughing

I have a very similar problem for quite a while now - the yellow shield would appear in my systray, I click it and tell it to download the updates. After this nothing will happen, but the yellow shield will reappear after the next reboot.

I have never investigated this; I will just go to http://update.microsoft.com/ and download the updates from there. The yellow shield is just like an alert to me that updates are available. It doesn't bother me that it doesn't actually do anything.

But if you are interested, you may find something in C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log - look near the bottom, around the time when AutoUpdate ran, if you can see any error messages or error codes.

there was a heap more for ether 12th but as I didn't get any updates at all, that I could find anyway. haven't pasted all that as it mainly was repeating.

I turned off auto and downloaded manually on 13.1. and it did do it successfully as I said after getting a bit sulk re not taking IE7.

Hope there is enough to see what has gone on.

I have had problems with auto since at least November

Ok did that but I am no longer using IE6 - have got used to Firefox and it is living up to its better reputation. Must admit,.hooked. :D

In that case you will need to use the IE Tab to be able to access Microsoft updates although I personally don't install it just for this purpose and use IE7 for updates.

Have you tried upgrading to IE7 just to see if it cures the problem?

You can always use Firefox for normal use if you want to!

I have actually installed IE7 a total of 3 times. Each time it has caused havoc with my connection. Cuts me off and then when it tries to redial say cant connect to phone book entry (?) also get the 2 different connection types together (simultaneously). You know the IE connection which I have set on auto and then there is the one which comes up if you go to start connect to.

No one seems to know why so I have dumped it now 3 times. :D

In between doing this over the course of weeks have scanned and used on line scanner and winsoc.xp and various other stuff then Window Live scan and then 3rd install and still same problem so something wrong somewhere.

I now have updates set on download after checking with me and that seems to be working fine.

I don't know if this makes any difference or not. I never use the little yellow thing, when it is there I just use Start/Windows update. I have never had any problems at all. After the installation and a reboot, the little yellow thingy does not reappear.

I do exactly the same as I found that clicking on the yellow shield doesn't work for me and the Microsoft Update website page just closes

I have had no problems using the 'Windows Update' method.
