ste_knight Posted January 16, 2007 Report Share Posted January 16, 2007 Hello. I am new here so sorry my first post is a problem, but I hope somebody can help me. Three nights ago, as I was turning my computer off I had a prompt to install windows automantic updates before shutting down my laptop. I accepted to do so and then went to bed. When I came to use my computer the next day, before the Windows loading screen appeared, I as given another prompt in DOS telling me that my system had been shut down incorrectly last time (don't know why, it was an automatic shutdown) and giving me various options of how to open Windows. These where:Start Windows in Safe ModeStart Windows in Safe Mode with Network somethingStart Windows in Safe Mode with command promptStart Windows from last known working setup (I havent worded this correctly)Start Windows normally.I have tried all of these options over the last couple of days but to no avail. The loading screen for windows disappears and then comes up with an error message telling me that mscvp60.dll cannot be found, and so Windows cannot load! Obviously I need to reinstall this dll file, but the fact that I am unable to access windows is causing me a big problem, as the only options my computer is giving me are the ones listed above, and there is a 30 second timer to start windows normally if I don't choose an option! It won't even let me enter setup.I just don't know what to do and I am starting to get annoyed. Can anyone here help me? Apologies that this question may be a stupid one, but I don't really know loads about computers!My laptop is a Dell Inspiron, and it is using Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. Scarecrow Man Posted January 16, 2007 Report Share Posted January 16, 2007 Are you sure the file is mscvp60.dll and not msvcp60.dll? (notice the V and C are switched)The file on the CD resides in the \I386\ASMS\6000\MSFT\VCRTLEvery DELL computer comes with a system restore disk. You should be able to use this disk to restore your computer to it's factory settings, but please be aware this will destroy all current data on your computer. There are ways to restore this file with an XP CD, but none that I know of without one. Is there another way to do this? As mentioned earlier, the prompt gives me thirty seconds to decide how I want to load Windows, before starting Windows normally. There's no option to go to setup from the prompt (it looks like a dos page), and there are no command lines for me to use. As I said, no matter what option I choose Windows will not start up, I get the loading screen, and then the page displays the error. Once I click 'ok' or 'cancel' on the error message the screen stays blank, with just the mouse pointer displayed. That is not good; but I cannot imagine that this is caused by the Visual C++ RTE missing - Windows itself does not use them. You may need a repair install. Do you have the Windows install disk? Thanks for your advice. I'll be getting the install disk off a friend. I get the same result no matter how I try to boot Windows.
