My Japanese language teacher presents me with an A4 sheets of kanji characters at the beginning of each lesson. Learning to recognize and memorize these Chinese characters is (for me) the most fun part of learning this language.

Imagine the shock this afternoon when I received a new sheet with kanji, and I couldn't recognize a single one of them! The reason: she used a completely different font from what is normally used here - the characters were quite abstract and ... well, completely different!

She said that all fonts have suddenly disappeared from Word - all but 4. When she opens the Control Panel, she can see all of them, but not in the Word font pull-down menu.

I have never seen this before, and I have no idea why the fonts are visible in the CP, but not in Word.

Any ideas how to reassociate all fonts with Word? I cannot possibly continue my Japanese lessons with that terrible font!

Can you try a repair of Word?

I think this is what I'll have to do if there are no easier solutions. (I have a copy of Japanese Office 2000 somewhere.)

Got some replies in the Microsoft Word newsgroup. This kind of thing happens when printers change, especially the default printer. Word shows only fonts that can be printed with the default printer. This article explains it with some details.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office?

You could also try inserting the CD, then highlight the main drive to install to and select next. You then click on each little box in turn, and from the drop down menu, select 'Run all from My computer'.
