makismagoo99
Here's the deal, I currently have two hard drives on my computer: a 40GB that came with it, and a 120GB that I added a couple years ago to store media on. Well I just bought a new 320 GB HDD because I filled up my 120GB one with all my media. The 40 currently has Windows on it. The new HD has a 16MB cache vs. 8MB on my other two.Would I notice a performance increase by installing windows on the 320 with the bigger cache?I'd rather ditch the 40GB drive and install Windows on the 120, then use the 320 as a media drive....but I'd trade that for better performance any day. Thanks! doug
I have recently shuffled my HDD's around with the purchase of a 320 GB HDD. My previous set up was Drive C 40 GB for the OS and drive D 80 GB for data and down loads. I had previously purchased Acronis. After the shuffle I now have Drive C 80 GB for the OS, Drive D 220 GB for data, partition E 100 GB for downloads and other. The 40 GB now sits in an external USB enclosure and is used for the Acronis backups. This has been a godsaver on 2 occasions since the change. May give you some food for thought. Scarecrow Man
You will notice a slight improvement, but nothing major. I think it would be a good idea to install Windows on the 120 (partitioned into 40GB and 80GB), and use the 320 for storage. Then, as doug says use the 40GB for backing up your system. The reason I say partition the windows drive into 40 and 80, is because 40GB is plenty for Windows, and you can use the other 80 as storage as well as the 320, giving you 400GB of storage. You can also easily move the My Documents folder to the second partition, by right clicking My Documents > properties and using the Move option. I store the My Documents folder on another drive, to avoid having to back it up all the time.
makismagoo99
Thanks a lot guys! I appreciate the advice. I'll look into getting an external HD enclosure for the old 40.
