McAfee problem

Hi all

I have just removed McAfee Antivirus (no longer entitled to updates). Now when I log on I am getting an error message as folows:

Error WBT-chkdate.exe

1125 FileTimeGet - File Not Found

Online:

DAT = FileYmdHms ("C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\\Virusscan Engine\4.0xx\scan.dat")

Any help with getting rid of this would be much appreciated.

It looks as though something has been left behind during the uninstall. Although, it really depends on what version you are using, as to how to go about this. Please tell us your version.

Or, if you are using version 5, 6 or 7. Follow the instructions in the link.

I had a similar problem when I uninstalled McAfee a couple of years ago - though I cannot be sure it was the same message.

I finished up searching the registry for every mention of McAfee and deleting them. This fixed the problem but should only be undertaken if you are confident with editing the registry.

A good start would be to download and run Crap Cleaner - you can get it from Here

There is a good possibility that this will find and delete any redundant files and registry entries left behind by McAfee.

Stupidly, as I've removed most of it I don't know what version it was. Would the Mcafee cleanup

VScleanuptool be any use?

Again, it depends on your version. Vscleauptool only works on certain versions.

I rran the 2005,6,7 removal tool and am still getting the error. Shoild I try the cleanup tool as well? There is still a Network Associates folder in Program Files with the checkdate.exe which is causing the error amongst its contents.

Further to which, would it be advisable to disable the checkdate.exe in startup?

That would be a band-aid solution, in that it would stop the error from coming up (if it is the source of the message), but it will not fix your problem.

Try running the other removal tools.

I have now run the mcpr.exe and VScleanuptool.exe but am still getting the startup error. I tried the bandaid solution which got rid of the startup error, but gave a System Configuration warning on startup. If I were to stick with the startup change can I get rid of the System Config warning?

Ah - I've realised what the problem may be. The McAfee installation was a customized one for school machines and staff at home. There was an extra routine which ran at the start and checked the date of the virus definitions file displaying a warning if more than a certain number of days out of date. I think this is the chkdate.exe which is still running at startup and giving an error because the file is now absent. Any help with how to get rid of this would be much appreciated.

The configuration change warning you refer to appears every time you modify the system startup. You can just check the box to not display it again.

You can remove the checkdate.exe entry from startup, by going to:

Start > Run > msconfig > starup tab. uncheck the checkdate.exe entry, As I said above, this is a band-aid solution, but since this file has now been deleted, I am unsure of another way to remove the file from being loaded.
