Pinging?

Now that I have at last got my friends Talk Talk connection working after a fashion, I decided to do an on line security check. No ports were open so that was fine. However, the report was that the computer could be pinged. The report stated that some firewalls can be configured to prevent this. I searched everywhere in Zone Alarm Pro, but could find no reference to this. Does anyone pleas know ho to configure Zone Alarm Pro to prevent the computer from being pinged?

I wouldn't be to woried about it. That is basically a marco / polo type request. One computer says marco, and if you recieve it, you say polo.

Expert rules not blocking traffic allowed by program permission. When you give a program permission to communicate and create an expert rule which is set to block, it is the program permission that takes precedence. For example, if you allow the "ping" program, make a rule to block ping replies from and ping another computer, the reply is allowed. Even though your rule said block, the fact the program was allowed means a reply to the (allowed) send is allowed.

You will need to set a Rule to not allow ping, according to this. Allowing the ping.exe acess will void the rule.

Also note, expert rules - which is required to create rules in Zone Alarm, is only available in the paid version.

I believe thats only if you use the ping program to ping someone else. ZA should come by default to block pings. You can check by going into the Firewall section, Main tab, click the Custom button for Internet Zone Security and look for ICMP ping. This person probably has a NAT/router for their internet connection? In that case the router is handling the pings and they are not even reaching the computer. I have dsl and ZA and this is what happens on my computer. If this is the problem will probably have to enter the routers configuration settings, usually this can be done through a browser by entering a url like http://192.168.1.1 or something similar. Then usually you can raise a security setting, enable a firewall rule or maybe forward ICMP requests.
