problems with winxp professional instalation ?! :(

hello, windows community.

I have never had problems with windows installation before, it's pretty straight forward. But now, windows is giving me a weird error.

It sounds something like this:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

...

note that this is a copy paste from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321637, not the exact message that I received. But it's pretty much the same.

This error occurs when windows is checking for components in my computer.

can you please lend me a hand?

another thing: ubuntu linux is working well on my pc and I have managed to install windows on top of it, with vmware, but my system isn't powerful enough to support this. I need a hdd install.

this is the exact error message that I am receiving:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message disable your driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced options and then select safe mode.

I have formatted my drive, so there is surely enough space.

I have reset BIOS and the same windows has worked on this system before.

I don't think I should be having driver problems yet, because windows is in the installation phase. Anyway, I don't think I can enter safe mode and do anything about drivers, because windows is not completely installed yet.

I can't change video adapters, I have an onboard intel graphics card.

I have no idea how to disable BIOS caching or shadowing.. but I think that if it worked before on this bios it should be working now.

I have done some more googleing and found that portcls.sys has something to do with a defective sound card.. but sound works perfectly on linux..

I'm just lost here..

Are you trying to install to a seperate hard drive or the same one as Ubuntu is on?.

it is the same hard drive, but a different partition

portcls.sys is a microsoft driver and nothing to do with a defective sound card.

As the error occurs on Windows doing its checks, have you tried disabling the sound in the BIOS and then trying to install XP

hey, thanx that worked! I deactivated the sound interface from BIOS and then it got through the installation!

but on previous installations, windows used to recognize and install all devices automatically on my system, this time it didn't even find my intel graphics controller.

Anyway, that seems a little bit less worying than that ugly error I was receiving. I'm off hunting for drivers :D

And then try to see if I can do anything about the sound...
