ie7 starting when I don't want it to

I have IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.2 on my computer. Firefox is the default browser, and IE 7 is set to be NOT the default browser. Over the last few days, the system, when clicking on links in e-mail or sometimes on links in displayed sites, will start an instance of IE 7 as well as Firefox. Both browsers run at the same time. I close IE 7, and click on another link in another e-mail, and sometimes IE 7 starts, and sometimes it doesn't. I want my default browser to be Firefox, and I want only it to start when I click on links. What's going on? How do I start looking for what may be causing this trouble?

Open IE > Tools > Internet Options. go to the Programs tab and make sure 'tell me if IE is not the default browser' and set it as default.

Then open Firefox and go to the settings and set it as the default browser.

The reason I wanted you to set IE as default first is to associate links properly. It is likely that perhaps some links did not correctly recognize firefox as the default. By setting IE as default, then changing it to firefox, I am hoping this problem will fix itself.

I don't use FF, and don't even like it, having tried it. If tou want to use it however, have you tried uninstalling it, running Crap Cleaner, searching for any remaining files and folders and deleting them? Then reinstall it, ensuring that you tick to make it default. An uninstall, followed by a good clear out then reinstall, often solves problems.
