Nix' Posted March 27, 2007 Report Share Posted March 27, 2007 Yesterday i installed a something w/ the windows updater, i go to turn on my computer and i have sound for a little bit, (for about 1min) if i open the program quick enough i can still listen to or hear the program, but the tool bar flickers and turns into classic windows tool bar and i can no longer open any programs that require sound w/o a error screen popping up saying "cannot find sound mixer." i was using onboard sound when it happened, so i downloaded, and installed the driver, still nothing worked. I had a sound card in my older computer that worked perfectly fine on that computer, but the same thing was happening when i installed it into this computer. I opened up the "sound and audio devices" properties, and it says there is no sound mixer available, but when i go to the hardware tab and my sound card driver is in there, windows say that it is working fine. I have no clue how to fix this and i do not want to reformat to solve the problem Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Only install drivers directly from the manufacturer, and it's also a good idea to only install a newer driver when your are having problems with the device. If it ain't broke, then don't fix it. :DI have updated my graphics card drivers loads of times and have had no problems in doing so.I do it to get increased performance as I'm a gamer.I only ever update directly from either the nVidia or ATI website though and never from the Microsoft website.I did do this once and ended up having to use Drive Image 7 to get everything back to normal again Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

At least you are relying on the manufacturers who made the card and not a third party. I don't know why Microsoft involve themselves.
