Vista Networking Problem.

Desktop computer with Vista Ultimate

Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router (with correct Vista driver) ethernet connected to the desktop computer and cable broadband modem. Two printers connected to the desktop using USB.

Dell Inspiron 510m laptop with built in wireless running Windows XP home.

I have got the wireless network up and running by following the Netgear installation routine exactly. The laptop can connect to the internet , can share printers and can access the shared files on the desktop over the wireless network .

The desktop can access the internet OK but the laptop is not visible on the network and cannot be accessed.

I have tried all the relevant suggestions listed in the pinned topics and the separate thread on a similar topic by steph. But still cannot access the laptop from the desktop. I am somewhat hampered by Vista being so different to XP in the way you access features and set things up.

I have tried switching off the firewalls - but it made no difference.

Any ideas....?

Same Workgroup

Different Computer Name

File and Printer Sharing Enabled

Simple Fire Sharing Enabled (where aplicable)

SM - thanks for the suggestion but it was a path I have trod several times whilst I wrestled with the problem.

Googling revealed that there are dozens - if not hundreds - of folk with the same problem. XP will talk to Vista but Vista refuses to communicate back.

I eventually happened on a networking forum which suggested a solution - and it has worked for me. I am aware however - from the same forum - that it has not worked for everyone.

Problem now resolved........ :D :D :D
