Cant install any windows!

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have been trying to fix a old computer. I cannot get 98, me, or xp on it. (bios will not boot to cd is biggest problem)

1) Ive tried making boot floppies from multiple sites. (changed bios) nothing happens.

2) Tried installing windows on different computer all the way until it says to restart your computer--take out hd and windows cd and put it in old pc--keep installing until somewhere in the installation, I get the blue screen :( . (tried 3 times and got the blue screen at different places each time after rebooting)

I have old megatrends bios that can only boot to a or c.

I thought that the floppy drive might be bad---tried 3 different ones.

I cant think of anything else to do.

Please Help!----Thank you!

You say when you try to boot on a floppy, "nothing happens". The floppy drive doesn't even make any sound, or blink the LED? Maybe the BIOS is corrupt?

I've never seen this situation, so maybe that old computer is really too old. But hopefully some others will drop in here later with some better ideas.

I've fixed one or two problems like this by reseating the RAM and checking all hardware contacts. I've even seen weird problems come from one pin being halfway broke or missing. I'm not saying this is your problem but if you haven't already checked it may help. Also why can't you get the computer to read the cd-rom? Is there no bios boot setting, no power, cds won't read, etc?

Sorry I havent replied for awhile. I put a lot of hours into this dum old computer and I took a break. I totally forgot about the thread that I started

I tried the all-in-one boot floppy. Didnt boot up like all floppies dont.

Thank you for the info about the light on the floppy drive scarecrow. That will save me a lot of time trying different things.

What do you mean by reseating the ram? (not sure what the ram looks like)(ill google it)

I think all of the cables have no missing pins. I've checked all of them that are in the computer.

Thank you! -----PS. The computer that I am trying to fix says: Gateway2000 P5-60 on the front.

What do yo mean...? It wouldn't boot.? , are you sure you made the disk correctly...?

Also -- If that is an old Gateway 2000 then you may be a little out of luck...

It sounds like this computer was running W3.0 or 3.3 i would say it's time to give it a good send off .

This computer would be unable to run WXP you would be hard pushed for it to run even W98SE that is USB aware and the Hard drive would be to small, and as i have just said the computer would be unable to run any USB hardware.

Thanks for the help. I do realize that this computer is VERY old now. I think I'm going to toss it. I see that it would be hard on it even to run 98.

Thanks again.
