Disk Management query

Recommended Posts

This screen is in Disk management. From here you can format that drive. I don't know what overhead means. You need this screen when you first plug in some USB external drives. They have to be formatted to suit your requirements, e.g. NTFS.

Yeah I've formatted a hard drive in the past but never took any notice of the 'Overhead' status.

After googling I think that 'Fault Tolerance' is referring to a RAID (mirror) system and so I can assume that Overhead is something to do with RAID

Thanks cozofdeath

I see now what those 2 entries are referring to:

Fault Tolerance - Whether the drive uses Windows 2000 fault tolerant features, such as mirroring or striping.

Overhead - The total additional drive space required as a result of the fault tolerant feature used.

I have tried out RAID 0 (stripe mode) and it caused me nothing but trouble so I went back to a 'normal' setup.

Fault Tolerence means RAID.

Yeah I meant that RAID 0 was giving me trouble as one of the hard drives would lose 'sync' with the other meaning that I had to rebuild the array again.

As this took over an hour, I soon got fed up of it although it didn't happen every time I booted the computer thank goodness.

This turned out to be a bug in the onboard RAID chip which I presume has now been patched?

Even if it has, I won't bother with RAID again.

I could of used mirror mode which would have been fault tolerant - never mind as I've since got rid of the other hard drive!

RAID 5 is ideal if you have the disk cost.

Isn't RAID 5 a little OTT for the average home user not to mention expensive?
