Sir Radfordin Posted January 11, 2003 Report Share Posted January 11, 2003 Fair point, and it will be interesting to see what happens.With a ratio of mods:users of around 1:10 (guessing there!) you don't need anyone creeping round!It would be a massive challenge to be able to attract random people who will post a problem and then go back to their lives in the way PCA has suceeded, one that it would be amazing to succeed in.Those who remember the closing of the lounge will no doubt be aware of Happy House, I joined for a bit but it was no-where near as good as PCA, though going back recently it does seem to have improved.This site so far only seems to be active in the latter part of the evening, its not going to keep me entertained at work for very long! Do you see 80,000 different names a day? Nope.Plus you have to register to view PCA - so that counts as a member even though the person might hate the site. You do however need that many people coming and going once or twice to get a good volume of calls and people doing different things. Read the relevant threads I think and didn't realise the gravity of the situation the mag/publishing group is evidently in. Thanked Guy and FE, like Mundy has just mentioned, in this context it is clear how much effort it must have taken (and no doubt rule bending) to allow us to archive what is Oliver Dell's copyright material - a good and noble gesture. The thing is, it's about perceived necessity in my opinion. I say perceived for I do not believe PCA made or are making th right decisions of late (Search facility and Gamesroom spring to mind). Again, the criticsm for me is the poor line of communication in being forewarned, better informed of PCA decisions and feeling like I'd been strung along - suggestion of use or lose it. Like I was going to take the bait? Didn't appreciate that at all but with their hands tied no doubt, the FE (and Guy) proved to be good sorts I think, and this being within the context of a few drawn swords in the past.Saw Tankus et-als suggestion for upping the subs rate. Would say that that seems only feasible option in present IT climate. What strikes me is the enormous loss in advertising revenue within the magazine itself. This being apparent with a comment how much slimmer PCad now is, compared to a few years (height of IT boom) back. Noticed this is a generalised trend in consumer PC mags, obviously IT companies, retailers, you name it, are cutting back on advertising costs and choosing to go for most likely, Computer Shopper etc (I guess). Noticed how Jungle.com dropped its advertising a while back, PC World also for a short time. The global economic predictions, US financial disarray and distrust and threat of hugely cosly war and attendant ramifications for oil prices. Seems, we can all blame bush for this one. So he's respsonible for shutting down the Gamesroom then? The b*&^^%d. Knew he was trouble!I dunno but I doubt PCA will choose to invest right now (in my mind the good thing to do). I'd like them to take up the suggestion of creaming a few more pennies from the mag cover price/subs. It's been pointed out well enough that paying to help/provide content for others (newcomers or not) isn't exactly smart if you want to attract visitors. Wonder how easy/difficult it really is to sort this mess out?Anyway. Finally got that Spearhead patch and I hope it works. Tonight has been a very expensive night for me on pay per min, but that's another story...Ash. Ownership of Corp Spook in Battlefield won't be easy, so ya better get practising.... me and Jeep share a close affinity. (Usually with it wrapped around my head after being blown up by or knocking into a tank. Funny thing is, it's a bit sensitive to the odd cliff jump too.) I'll also still buy the mag because no matter how good any site is, NOTHING compares to having a paper/magazine in hand. Scarey to think there are so many people there with so much cash. :lol: IP, you were refering to an article you'd read then - Spen wrote something in one of the last mags as this would explain why I'd not seen it. Surely though, he'd be a little better informed than us about site closure? If PCA is in the market position it is, then I'll stop worrying about the site's vulnerability and wonder instead how it is that they could become such a victim of their own (online) success. Never heard of exponential rise in numbers I suspect. Membership had gone from 20 - 30K to 80K+ in time I'd been there.All said and done then. Back to gaming I agree. Gave MOHAA a good go last night since I got it working (cheers) and have to admit it's pretty good. I was always a RTCW kind of guy but I may just be converting to the other side now. Maybe...
