blujakx Posted April 13, 2007 Report Share Posted April 13, 2007 My pictures for about a month have had .jpg typed at the end of their names and they didn't use to. Its not just my pictures, my videos have .avi and my documents have .doc and if i try to delete it, it deletes the whole thing. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted April 13, 2007 Report Share Posted April 13, 2007 Welcome to the Windows Forum!This is normal - the file extension is there to identify what kind of file it is: .JPG or .GIF are graphic files, .AVI or .MPG are video files, .DOC or .TXT are text documents, etc. They are always present, and they are required. If you rename them to a name without extension they become unusable.However...these file extensions are usually (by default) not visible to the user, and I think this is what you are complaining about. -pops- Posted April 13, 2007 Report Share Posted April 13, 2007 Personally, I like to be able to see the file extensions - they give me information of the file type - I know a .jpg is a picture, .avi is a movie, .doc is a Word document and so on. On special file extensions they give me information on what program to use to open them example, .rmv tells me I need Real Player (or equivalent) to open the file. If I tried to open that file (knowing it was a video file but not knowing the extension) in Windows Media Player it would tell me it couldn't do it.I can also know is the file is a potential "nasty", for example, I am very wary of files with the .pif or .scr extensions.
