davyldn Posted April 20, 2007 Report Share Posted April 20, 2007 My subscription has just ended with Norton I have removed the installation as I now want to use the free windows firewall which comes with sp2 but I suspect Norton has modified or disabled the settings. I have opened up the windows firewall settings window hoping to be able to turn it on but it is checked to off and both 'on and off' options are shaded out so i cannot change it. There is a message just below the tabs stating ' For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy' but not sure if this is what is preventing me from turning it on. I also tried going into the security centre option but it just tells me it's unable to turn the firewall on and to open up the firewall icon to turn it on from there which i already said above this also dont work. As a last resort I will uninstall sp2 then install it again to solve the problem but if anyone has any advice or instructions of how i can solve this issue without doing that I would be most grateful. andsome Posted April 20, 2007 Report Share Posted April 20, 2007 Most on here woul recommend you NOT to use Windows firewall. I would recommend Comodo. Available hereIt is wise to check that you have got rid of as much Norton junk as possible. I take it that you have uninstalled it correctly. Now try Start/Search and type Symantec, and click Search. Delete all folders that the search finds. Then repeat the process but type Norton. If any folders won't delete, try doing this in Safe mode. Then and only then install Comodo. If you don't fancy Comodo then try Zone Alarm. Having used them both, my preference is for Comodo. After installation, you will continually get messages every time a program needs to access the INTERNET. Put a tick in the box which says remember this action, and click allow. At first you will also get a message every time there is a hacking attempt. To finally get rid of the last vestiges I edited the registry, but would not suggest this to anyone who is unsure. The suggested tool and the SEARCH should get rid of all that really matters.
