ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
We wanted to try the new location of Casita Aoyama (03-5485-7353; www.casita.jp) since its reopening in February, but it was the birthday of a good friend that finally got us there. We knew that our old friend Tōru (formerly Tableaux & Stellato) was working there, but I didn't know that he was the acting Maître du restaurant. A nice surprise was also to find John there, who's recently left from Tableaux. We were given the royal treatment, starting from the central table in the main dining room. Upon being seated we were presented with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, with my friend's name printed on the label. Next we were invited out to the terrace, where my friend was introduced to the trick how to open a champagne bottle with a sword (it was more like a saber actually). The menu is interesting: the first page is entirely devoted to introduce the concept of the restaurant, as well as the staff. Only from the second page it starts to have some foods - see the website for the full menu. After an amuse-bouche of a deep-fried and marinated sardine I had a risotto made from white, red and black rice with chopped marrons, then a Tasmanian salmon filled with guacamole. After the champagne we proceeded with a Chilean Arboleda Cabernet Sauvignon (¥6,400; the wine list is also on the website). All was excellent quality, perfect service, and all that in a really beautiful restaurant. At the end we were surprised that the bill did not exceed ¥10,000 per person, and also that we've spent almost 5 hours in the restaurant without noticing how late it had gotten!
