Irene Posted May 2, 2007 Report Share Posted May 2, 2007 Yesterday, I had a Winsock error message......I seemed to be after I had been trying to view one of those 360 degree photographic things on a property website. I completely lost connectivity both with IE and emails. However, the message said that Windows could repair the damage, so I let it proceed and do the fix. My system still didn't feel very stable, so this morning I have done a System Restore to Monday evening. -pops- Posted May 2, 2007 Report Share Posted May 2, 2007 It should have done but, SR is not completely reliable.The only way to be certain is to do a re-install from backup but, that seems rather drastic if things seem to be working now. I was looking at some web site that was far too fancy for its own good. The screen went blank and the machine shut down. I restarted and I got a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message and then something similar to the message you received.Everything worked OK afterwards and I more or less forgot about it. Basically it defines how Windows network software should access network services (like TCP/IP - Internet)Having this reset to default is fine. Infact, its a good idea to not change anything in the Winsock catalog.I cannot explain the error message, because there is no reason for a program to alter your winsock catalog, although there are some known spyware programs which add entries into the winsock catalog.Best to do a virus scan / spyware scan just to be safe.
