trackrat Posted May 6, 2007 Report Share Posted May 6, 2007 I am not sure where to post this as i am not sure if it is a software or hardware problem.This has been happening for about 6 months now, (I have posted about it once before. http://www.windowsforum.org/forums/index.p...mp;#entry230437 )Basically on rare occasions it will go through POST successfully, then the screen comes up with the moving bar, then after the bar has made about five full passes the screen goes blank.Normally pressing the reset button will cure it and it boots OK.When I did the previous post it would not boot into windows at all and I got round it by doing an Acronis restore, I have just tried that again and Acronis will not pick up my external hard drive to restore from.Eventually after about 25 reboots I managed to get into Windows and had a look in the event viewer and the only error I could see was this.The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load atapi PCIIde. Can anyone help as this has me really frustrated, I do not now where to start looking.I have stripped it back to the bare essentials and no problems, then added different components and it ran with no problems for a while and now it is back with the intermittent problem and it has just taken me 25 reboots to get it to work. cozofdeath Posted May 6, 2007 Report Share Posted May 6, 2007 I would check all cables (especially IDE/hard drive cables) and make sure there are no connection problems. On my computer pciide.sys (ide bus) is like the third device to load in about 150 so its probably extremely important. The only thing I can think of is running the System File Checker if the file is corrupt somehow. But I would think its a hardware problem before a software one. Another thing, I don't know if it will have anything to do with this problem but make sure there are no conflicts in your device manager. -pops- Posted May 6, 2007 Report Share Posted May 6, 2007 I'm very much inclined to go with the dying or faulty power supply (as in the previous thread) - the symptoms are highly typical of this. Had I seen the previous thread, I would have suggested this as I have experienced the same or very similar several times - once with a nearly new PSU. trackrat Posted May 6, 2007 Author Report Share Posted May 6, 2007 Thanks cozofdeath, have tried new cables, there are no conflicts in device manager, I cannot run chdisk as I cannot get it to reboot.My thought is it might be the motherboard.pops it is definately not the power supply, I have an Antec PSU tester which shows no faults and I have also swapped the PSU to another computer with no problems.
