AlanHo
For some time I have subscribed to Telewest (now Virgin Media) 4Mb/s cable broadband and have been happy with it.Recently I have been doing some speed tests - using a variety of test sites - to find that my actual average download speed is rarely above 2.2 Mb/s. Hence - why pay for 4 and only get 2.A few days ago I asked them to change my subscription to 2 Mb/s - which saves me £7 per month. The same speed tests now indicate I am averaging 1.4 Mb/s - but I do not notice the reduction in actual computer usage. Emails and browsing seem just as fast. The only time I might notice the reduced speed is when downloading a big file - but that is something I rarely do anyway.I wonder how many of you are paying extra for a broadband service you don't really need. While I was at it - I also cancelled my XL TV package which had 129 channels and went from a subscription of £20.50 a month to zero - but still get about 40 cable channels for free. Management has failed to notice that she has fewer channels to flick between and moan about - so it makes me wonder why on earth I subscribed to so many channels in the first place.I now have an extra £27.50 pocket money per week to fritter on other pleasures. andsome
I am on NTL/Virgin 4 MB BB and always get in excess of 3.9MB download. I gave up their TV some time ago, but am about to take a months trial of over 90 channels, plus access to over 500 films etc for £1 per month. I will give it a try for the month before making a final decision.
dagwoood
I've always found that you get download speeds pretty close to what you pay for, as per andsome. I'm on the 10meg service and this is what I'm currently getting:As to cost, I was paying nearly £50 for the 4meg service, the middle (L) tv package and their basic phone service. I gave customer services a ring and basically said I was thinking of moving as I could get faster broadband and more tv channels if I went elsewhere. They leaned over backwards to keep my custom and gave me a retention discount that's added to my account for as long as I stay with them. I now get 10meg broadband, the top tv (XL) package and free evening and weekend calls for £5 less than I was originally paying.I'm waiting for my 20meg upgrade now :)
