Updates each Wednesday from Microsoft HQ

Yesterday had a tech advice re updates due for this month being a bit suspect as many in the USA had reported that their IE7 had stopped working and Outlook was affected etc. (Washington Post)

I don't have IE7 on my computer as too much hassle with it, tried 4 times and 4 times it was corrupt and didn't work properly so have IE6 and don't need it anyway as use Firefox.

Checked my Security Centre and low and behold had auto updates turned on. I turned it off. As I have had some problems with it, so update manually myself.

Today Friday, booted up and there it was - that little yellow shield and updates being downloaded, and low and behold, checking with Security Centre Auto turned on.

So how does this happen?

Windows not shut down cleanly? Can you try

• turn off automatic updates
  
• reboot (restart Windows)
  
• check if automatic updates are still turned off

You can also do the following:

start > run > services.msc

Look for "Automatic Updates" and disable it.

You can also stop the automatic updates while it is running by doing the following command:

net stop wuauserv

start > run > cmd > net stop wuauserv

to start it again

start > run > cmd > net start wuauserv

Note the spaces. They are required. This will stop any automatic updates in progress, and also turn them off until the computer is restarted (unless specified as disabled in the services tab as I explained above)

IK Pat first - did that turned it off - rebooted and back on again.

Had turned it off before closing down.

Scarecrow Man - thank for that have made a note in my how to do book I keep and now doing it - as I get the downloads usually a couplte of times but not successful, lot of activity and no return so to speak

So went onto manual - every time I get alert from Washington Post Techs that new updates are available and what they do etc and comments from Americans who have already got them down - I go manually and pick what I need.

PS Pat and others - I have solved one problem in that my computer is running faster because - well I think so - finally go our power co to upgrade the wire into the house from 220 volts to 239 a couple of days ago. May not affect the computer at all, but cooking is a hell of a lot faster, had taken 25 minutes to boil 3 litres of water which I do daily as we have to to drink it, and since the upgrade 10-12 mins even at lunchtime so terrific plus better picture on our Tv - maybe I kid myself but even the lights seem brighter. :lol: Must admit had to tell porkies as realized they had no intention to do it unless it gained them financially , and now they think I will be putting in 3.5 electric heaters etc instead I will be waiting for the mains gas roll out as that is in my village and will be cheaper - naughty girl thats me :D
