Tankus Posted May 30, 2007 Report Share Posted May 30, 2007 Ive rented cruisers from Blake's of Wroxham a few times , years back (late 80's), not been on a narrow boat though ,,,,the best ones we found was a fore and aft double birth and a centre cockpit with retractable roof ....dead easy to "drive" ... I did hit one boat just outside of great Yarmouth ....due to the tidal race ... ..honest guv...much to the beer gardens amusement on the opp bank.... (just before the bridge into Yarmouth harbour ) , that was the only place we had to pay to tie up for the night too ..... Last time I went (broads) though was a bit dissapointing .....statred to end up in convoys of boats inbetween the broads ....... getting out of Wroxham at 4pm on a satuday reminded me of hanger lane gyratory in rush hour .......Definitely rent a few out Irene ..try different types ,but go a bit off season , big drop in rental prices .. and don't dismiss the canal cruisers out of hand (might be a bit cheaper as narrows got a niche premium ) If you want an idyllic holiday though ...try France .... I spent a glorouis fortnight on the canal du midi along side the Gironde, we then took a tributary off and went up the river Lot ...The French dont do canals.... the rare boats that did pass us (only one or two in a day) were either german or english crewed .... and not full of half cut teens in captain hats ,3 sheets the the wind .... All the locks we went though were fully automated ..card swipe access (Lot) or on the midi turn a pole hanging in the middle of the canal ....A taste of rural france was quite an eye opener.. and a waist line spreader ...Next time though (eventually) I think it will be the Dordogne ..... bit more to see Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I suppose it reflects the popularity. However, we will certainly get some experience before we seriously consider spending on one of our own.
