mark2
With the NT family it is known as Checkdisk. It is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkdsk.exe
monkey
mark how did you know that code
mark2
I ran chkdsk from the run command which told me it was C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkdsk.exe when the command (msdos in 98) window comes up

mark2
you can create a shortcut on your desktop to it, r/click >new shortcut and copy paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkdsk.exe into the box then name it Scandisc. :D
monkey
i have done that now thanks for you help :D
mark2
to fix errors you will have to run it with /f at the end.

monkey
what do you meen /f
mark2
open windows explorer, drag n drop from desktop to C /documents and settings/your name/start menu/ programs/accessories puts it in there alongside paint etc ;)the /f at the end tells windows to fix any errors but with ntfs will only fix before booting, so you need to reboot to fix errors. monkey
how do you make it fix the problem though
mark2
it will check and fix on boot up, if the command is chkdsk /f, or your shortcut is C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkdsk.exe /f

peter e
XP home. I don't get a Tools option when I right click C: in My Computer. I did notice though that there's an option to format the hard disc. Bit naughty of Microsoft to make it so easy to accidentally format the hard disc, isn't it? For System Tools, I go to accessories and there's just the defragmenter/analyser and disc cleanup - or am I missing something here? My XP is an OEM pre-installed copy from Evesham. Perhaps there are utilities on the disc that haven't been installed.Pete
bvw
Peter.....right click and then properties (at the bottom of the list), you'll find it there.
peter e
Thanks, bvw. Didn't occur to me to select Properties. Thought they meant Tools was in the context menu. I'd never noticed the Tool tab before even though I often check properties to see how much disc space I'm using. Pete
