prem1er Posted June 29, 2007 Report Share Posted June 29, 2007 Hi. I'm trying to save some of my friends files after a recent Vista crash and I was able to start Windows in safe mode Command Line. I have an external drive and I was wondering how I can mount the drive so the command line recognizes it. Any help would be appreciated. Alan2273 Posted June 29, 2007 Report Share Posted June 29, 2007 An easier way would be to download a Linux iso live CD (Knoppix, Ubuntu or Linux Mint).These will read NTFS and allow you to copy the files across to an external flash or hard drive.Burn the download to CD, set the computer as first boot from the CD, when it has loaded it will show all the hard drives and any external drives and you can drag and drop files between them. mcb2001 Posted June 30, 2007 Report Share Posted June 30, 2007 the problem about mounting that external drive, is that when you run safe mode, only a few drivers are loaded, so the "firewire" or "USB" dont always get booted...So what your looking for, is actually a way to boot in safe mode, and get the firewire or usb driver in aswell...I would suggest, if its a firewire based drive, that you boot in safe mode with network, since firewire is a network based system...The usb problem is a tad more tricky, since it can be hard to get a driver up after boot - especially in safe mode, so i have no real clue on how to do this, but i would suggest that you find which file starts the driver, and try and get it running... I never looked into it , but it is supposed to be as powerful as bash if not more. I guess it should have a mount option but I couldn't google a good tutorial ...I will go for the LiveCD option as well...Both Vista and XP doesn't run DOS at all, DOS is an operating system of its own, and was the backbone of 95 and 98, but in XP every trace of it is gone!The thing XP runs, is a command line enterpreter, which acts as DOS would to the given commands.Same goes for Vista, which thougth have a far more extensive version of the command line enterpreter...
