Many of us have a soft spot somewhere when it comes to a good, handmade Italian pizza. Twenty years ago in Tokyo that was an impossible dream! However the last ten years have seen great changes in this area, and there are now numerous pizzerias and trattorias that have excellent pizza on offer. Arguably the best, if most expensive, is Isola (www.isola.st) in Shirokane plus 5 other locations. Their soft crust, slightly elevated at the edge, results in a typical Napoli-style pizza. Isola is also renowned for its very extensive list of Italian wines. Da Pasquale (www.pasquale.jp) near Ebisu Garden Place is a spin-off from Isola, and offers similar quality pizza and large wine list. In the same area we are spoiled with Delizioso Italia (www.buona-italia.jp/delizioso.htm), Vacanza (www.buona-italia.jp/vacanza.htm), and Partenope (www.partenope.jp) with locations in Ebisu and Hiroo. Partenope is one of the few restaurants in Japan accredited by “Vera Pizza Napoletana”. In Yoyogi we find Il Pentito (www.meridionale.com) that serves paper-thin, crispy, Roma-style pizza. This place is very popular, and a reservation is absolutely required. Another pizzeria that we can’t enter without a reservation is Napule (www.bellavita.co.jp/napule) in Omote Sando. Their pizza comes warmly recommended, but we haven’t made our reservation yet. And then there is the world of Carmine (www.carmine-tky.com) with seven restaurants around the Tokyo area. Each restaurant is different, and most of them serve Carmine’s crispy-type pizza. Carmine’s brother Babbo Angelo (no website!) serves his own pizza in Jiyugaoka. Last but not least we should mention the place where we had our very first true pizza in Tokyo – at Trattoria Sabatini di Roma (www.sabatini.co.jp) in Aoyama.
