gasnmyveins Posted July 8, 2007 Report Share Posted July 8, 2007 I have 2 options. I have a 40 gig drive with a damaged install of XP and all my programs, which is FAT32. I also have a 300 gig drive, bought for storage for our family pictures, which currently has Ubuntu on it because windows crashed. I don't have enough knowledge to get any practical use out of Ubuntu, so I'm going to wipe it in either case. I can't find my old XP upgrade disc, so I will probably end up buying another disc. I could repair the install on the 40 gig drive, or install an old win98 disc I have onto the 300 gig drive and then upgrade it. Will I be able to convert to NTSF in either case? If I install to the 300 gig drive, will I be able to move the programs and files from the 40 gig (from FAT32 to NTSF) to the 300 gig, and then wipe the 40 gig? Also, is it possible to install the upgrade disc to a blank drive, if I can find the key for my other XP install? Thanks. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Seshomaru Samma Posted July 9, 2007 Report Share Posted July 9, 2007 Installing win98 and then upgrading to XP doesn't make any sense, you should just install XP directly.The only possible problem is that you probably formated your disc into ext3 for Ubuntu and the Windows installation CD will not be able to see the partition. It will probably claim that the disc is empty or that there is no disc. If you want to get rid of Ubuntu (and I personaly suggest you stick with it for a while ,it is well worth it) then you need to format the disc to a file system that Windows recognise. The easiest way will be to do it with Ubuntu's live CD.Boot from the live CD ,opeb a terminal and run this commandsudo gparted(if your version of the liveCD doesn't have it you can install gparted by putting this command in the terminal:sudo aptitude install gpartedGaprted has a simple graphical interface ,use it to format the Ubuntu drive from ext3 to FAT32.Once you have a running Windows installation on one of the disc it will be able to see the other disc, you will able to imprt your files but I don't think you can import your programmes.
