voltec Posted July 26, 2007 Report Share Posted July 26, 2007 hey everyone,recently "helped a friend" by installing a new hard drive in a dell dim 3000 desktop, the software reinstallation seemed to go well untill i could no longerget the icons to adjust to a usable size, and i also found that the system could not find drivers to run..ethernet, multimedia/audio, sm bus, or vga video controller.........what's up with that...is that not included in the rehab software ?? don't laugh we all had to start somewhere...i'm at a loss and have been looking for drivers but it seems ya got to be hooked up...i-net wise to get the goods, this machine will not connect with the interneti sure could use someone's recommendations on what to do next, before my friend's wife shows up at my door...thanks in advancep.s. Some special devices with drivers that are not part of Windows have the drivers delivered with the hardware on a CD-ROM or DVD.Use the Control Panel's Add Hardware applet to search for existing hardware, and install the appropriate drivers for them. If you have installed XP from a supplied disk then it may just be the operating system you've put back on and all the other drivers will be on a separate disk or even an hidden partition of the original drive. Some suppliers place them on a second CD, others use the hidden partition method. See if you can access the original drive as a slave to the new one and extract all your drivers from the hidden partition, it should show up as a small drive of about 6Gb on the original drive if you look at it from 'My computer...' THE HARD DRIVE THAT WAS REMOVED WAS TOAST AND WOULD NO LONGER RESPOND AT ALL SO I CAN'TACTUALLY TELL YOU IF THERE WAS A HIDDEN DISC, I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD GOTTEN ALL THE DISC'S SUPPLIED WITH THE DELL DIM 3000 WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED....I REMOVED THE OLD H-DRIVE, AND ORDERED AN EXACT REPLACEMENT WESTERN DIGITAL BY MODEL #, I INSTALLED THIS DRIVE AND REINSTALLED THE ORIGINAL OS DISC'S SUPPLIED TO ME, EVERYTHING WENT WELL, WINDOWS XP RUNS GREAT....BUT....THE ICONS ARE HUGE, I CANNOT CHANGE THE DISPLAY..PER CONTROL CENTER...AND I HAVE NO FUNCTION OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED 4 ITEMS...UNFORTUNATLY AT THIS POINT, I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO CONFESS THAT I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING...CAN YOU TELL ??I HOPE THIS CLARIFIED WHAT I ACTUALLY DID....HELP A BROTHER OUT...I CAN USE THE EDUCATIONTHANK YOU AGAIN Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

HP pc, or any other prefab pc package pc?try searching the site from the company you got it from [like Dell] for drivers, using a serial number noted on the side of the computeranother reason that some things wont work might be that the devices might not work anymore...?you could also try to search for the drivers, using another computer,burning them onto a cd or putting them on a usb disk and installing them on the other computer Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

'Add Hardware' should find it on the HD if Windows has it.Otherwise try Coreper's approach.And, as AlanHo has remarked, please do not publish your email address in here or any other public forum.
