XP Home reinstall after MB swap

I swapped out the motherboard from my 2 yr old compaq Presario ADM64 3300+, with XP home.

The machine will boot up into live linux CD and seems to be working fine.

However, I am unable to reinstall the OS either from my recovery CD's or the recovery partition in the HD. Screens are as follows:

1) black screen with text "loading compaq recovery"

2) Black screen with red compaq logo

3) blue screen indicating "error was encountered", "windows is shutting down to prevent damage... " etc. and a long code.

The machine is three weeks out of warranty (of course) and one time tech support is $49.

Is there any simple fix to this, or will I need to find get a *real* XP install disk (?)

I would think I should e able to legally use any other XP home desk with my own activation code to restore my system .

Thanks
