devnull Posted July 28, 2007 Report Share Posted July 28, 2007 Does anyone know a way to identify which version of Windows a product key is for without trying it out on each one. I work in a computer repair shop and sometimes we have to try several versions before we find the one that the key is for. I have already looked some on google but can't find anything useful. You say you got the keys but not the product they belong to, that is rather odd, how did you get them?In all machines I've seen the product key comes in an attached sticker which among several things displays the product name and the key product, I think the sticker is called "Certificate of Authenticity". If you are getting it within the system itself you can always open "My Computer -> Properties" to find out what product you are using. If you get them through a serial's page or a key generator then they should also tell you the version of Windows the key works with.Staff. devnull Posted July 29, 2007 Author Report Share Posted July 29, 2007 First, just to be clear, we don't use illegal product keys; Either we buy it or it's supply by the customer. Which is sometimes where the problem comes in; e.g. The customer brings in an unbootable system with no sticker and later supplies the key to us when we need to do a format and reinstall. We don't always get the version from them though... On systems with no sticker that we are able to boot, we can use keyfinder to get the key, but we may not write down the version, or it may be an upgrade version and we try to install with a regular CD. It happens differently each time. It also doesn't happen too often, but it would be nice to have a tool to identify the key for when it does.
