Bistro d’Arbre has been around for a long time – 1974 is readable on a faded print on an old plate. It has also been a favorite of ours in its various locations for providing fine food at affordable prices in a casual setting. Earlier this month they opened a new venue in Ebisu Minami (03-3760-0449), with wine bar Bun Doka on the ground floor, and the restaurant on the second. The opening night was packed, and we expect it to remain so in the future. The food menu was not yet final, but what we tried from the provisional menu was the quality that we knew and expected from the Bistro d’Arbre crew. We started with a series of appetizers that we shared: a slightly warmed ratatouille, deep-fried smelt with Japanese spring vegetables, boudin noir – which is getting more and more popular in Tokyo, a spring vegetable quiche, and a very nice beans and vegetable risotto. We continued with a fried sea bass (and more spring vegetables), entrecôte with bamboo shoots purée, and an excellent cassoulet. Dessert was served as an assorted plate of everything available, which included the gâteau au chocolat that we have in fond memory from the Shirokane restaurant, as well as strawberry tart, and pumpkin pudding. The wine selection is not large, but offers some good bottles between ¥4,500 and ¥6,500. We had a lovely Sancerre with the appetizers, and a medium-bodied Grenache to follow.
