-pops-
It's a long time since I used Optical Character Recognition software as I found it not to be very good and it was taking me as long correcting its errors as it was typing the full text out myself.I'm sure things have improved so, does anyone have any suggestions for a good open source (or otherwise FREE) OCR program? I'm not keen to pay out any money as it's more or less a one off project.N.B. I've just tried SimpleOCR and I'm not very impressed. It doesn't seem any improvement over my ancient OmniPage Pro. Alan2273
Have you got office 2003 pops, it has its own OCR package that is supposed to work well.
-pops-
Unfortunately not, I'm on the previous Office XP version (That is the one before 2003, isn't it?).I can't find any reference to it in the help files.
AlanHo
popsI realise this is not of any help - but I recently bought a canon scanner which came with Omnipage SE. I already had Omnipage 12 - which was quite good - but this canon version knocks spots off it. Even quite complex pages with columns, inset photos and tables are rendered very accurately.I rather doubt that you are going to find decent freeware - OCR programmes are generally huge and quite complex - premably taking many thousands of programming hours. I can't see anyone doing it for nuffin. If you only have one project - do you not have a friend who could do the work for you..?
-pops-
I've given it to my son to do for me now - it's partially for him anyway :) I'll close this, thanks.
