USB Speeds

My computer has 4 USB2 sockets on the motherboard (at the rear of the tower) and two sockets at the front of the tower which are connected to an internal socket on the motherboard. I added 4 more USB2 sockets by fitting a USB2 PCI card into a spare slot in the tower to replace a Belkin USB2 powered hub.

I use an external USB2 SATA hard drive to take Acronis back-ups and have just discovered that the time taken varies considerably depending on which USB2 socket the drive is plugged into.

For example, To take a full disk image of my C: and D: drives (Acronis file size 47.7 GB) onto the external hard disk using Acronis 10 on my Vista computer takes the following times :-

Connected to a motherboard socket.........49 minutes

Connected to the Belkin powered hub.......58 minutes (I reconnected it - via a motherboard USB2 socket - for comparison purposes)

Connected to one of the front sockets.......117 minutes

Connected to a socket on the PCI card......Acronis advised it will take 3 hours - I therefore cancelled the test.

There is clearly a huge difference between the various USB2 connections - but why? :uhm:

Be assured that the PCI card is a USB2 model

I am pleased you brought this up because it seems to confirm what I thought was just something to do with my imagination.

I also have four at the back and two at the front. However on mine the front two seemed much quicker to me. I could see no logical reason for this and so put it down to senile whatsit, but you seem to have conformed that a difference is possible.

Well:

First is because its a fully operational USB 2.0 slot, and its dedicated for what it is - therefore fast.

Third is properly because its running on the same channel as the motherboard ones, and therefore put second in line for transfer, where on other motherboards it might be another channel, and therefore have the same, or somewhat same speed as those on the back.

Second is because the powered hub is a hub, and therefore uses some bandwith to check where the "packeges" are going.

The PCI card slot, because its a USB 2.0 compatible slot you plug it into, but only a PCI slot (with limited speed - might just be a driver issue).
