I am not up to date with legislation and wasn't sure - but my driving licence clearly shows that I am licenced to drive category BE with a little picture of a car and trailer - so in my case it seems clear.In her case she is shown as being able to drive category B and B1 - but it shows no picture of a trailer. Hence I assumed she was not allowed but suggested she should Email the DVLA for clarification.This is a copy of her Email and their reply :-I have a driving license with a category B and B1. I am moving house and would like to know if I can tow a small trailer on my Nissan Almera 1.5I have tried to read the web site details and it's just got me confused.Thank you for your email.Since 1 January 1997 a new driver may drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass) with a 750kgs MAM trailer (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) OR a vehicle combination of up to 3.5 tonnes MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. catgate Posted August 16, 2007 Report Share Posted August 16, 2007 An acquaintance of mine had a similar thing not long ago, and putting together your friends reply and what I remember of John's wife's enquiry, the answer to the question seems to be "Yes". However the car must be heavier than the load it is pulling, (for grip and breaking purposes ", and the total load (car+ trailer +contents) should be no more 4 tons (which is probably a bit limiting for a Nissan Almira).
