Hard Drives

Recommended Posts

Personally, I find SATA drives a damnable nuisance and the cause of more problems than they are supposed to solve. An old machine will most likely need SATA drivers installed before it will see the drive.

If you are replacing an ATA drive you would be best doing a direct replacement with a drive of the same type.

SATA connectors are small red units with only a few pins (can't remember how many) very different to the wide 80 pin IDE connectors.

Seagate is quite good. I also have been more than satisfied with my Western Digital drives. I have had a 40GB Western Digital Drive for as long as I can remember 7+ years at least. Maxtor on the other hand, I have had numerous problems with. I had a 200GB drive crash on me, sent it in for replacement only to have it crash again within 6 months (total of 2 years, so an average of 1 year with 1 drive).

The 400GB external I am using now is a Seagate, and I have not had any problems with it, mind you it is only 6 months old. My internal is a 200GB Western Digital which has also lasted 3 years so far.
